Medical Benefits

Your health and well-being are important to us. The University offers a wide range of medical benefits to eligible appointees and their dependants, as set out in the University Staff Medical Benefits Scheme. You can check your eligibility and entitlement at the HKU Portal following the steps here.

On-campus Outpatient Care & Health Services

An on-campus health clinic is located on 2/F of the Meng Wah Complex of the Main Campus. The clinic is run by the University Health Service (UHS) providing outpatient care and health services. Outpatient care shall mostly be provided free of charge, except that a fee will be charged for dental care, physiotherapy, external appliances, preventive, elective or expensive items/procedures. Appointments may be made by phone, in person at the clinic or via the HKU Portal (Campus Information Services > Service Departments > University Health Service > UHS Web Appointment Booking).

Outside Panel Doctors Scheme

Outside panel doctors have been appointed to provide additional primary care services complementary to that of the UHS. Eligible appointees and their dependants may consult a general practitioner outside the campus at a subsidised charge. Users should make medical appointments directly with the clinics under the scheme. A fixed consultation fee is then payable at the clinics for each consultation while other charges (e.g. laboratory investigations, x-rays or additional drugs) are to be borne by users. Learn more details here.

Self-pay Medical Scheme & Dental Scheme

The University has arranged with outside panel doctors and dental groups to offer additional self-pay healthcare services outside the campus. Staff members and their immediate families may enjoy healthcare services that include general practitioner consultation, specialist consultation, Chinese medicine consultation, physiotherapy and dental treatment at preferential rates.

Specialist Consultation & Inpatient Care

Subject to prior referral and authorisation made by the UHS, eligible staff and their dependants may receive reimbursable specialist consultations, investigations and treatment in Hospital Authority (HA)/ private specialist clinics or inpatient care in HA/ private hospitals. Eligible patients should pay the providers directly for their own medical expenses at the time of consultation and apply for reimbursement within 3 months of the transaction date. Learn more details regarding referral advicereimbursement procedures and reimbursement limit from the website of the UHS.

Maternity Benefits

Subject to eligibility, the University provides maternity benefits inclusive of doctor’s fee for antenatal care, delivery and postnatal care, all related investigations and hospital charges up to the maximum reimbursement limit. Learn other breastfeeding and antenatal information here.

Medical Insurance

The University has arranged catastrophic insurance to cover eligible staff members (excluding dependants) who suffer from a specified list of serious diseases. The premium is paid by the University while the plan is administered by an outside insurer.

A staff contributory top-up medical insurance plan is also available for eligible staff and dependants. The plan enables users to obtain additional medical coverage at reasonable rates to minimise the shortfall between the University’s coverage and the actual cost of hospitalisation. New staff members who wish to enrol must do so within the first month of joining the University.
