VISA APPLICATION

Employment/Training Visa

*Please read the information below before submitting your visa application
If you do not have the right of abode or right to land in Hong Kong, you are required to obtain an employment/training visa before coming to Hong Kong to take up your appointment.  You may also need to apply for dependant or student visas, as appropriate, in respect of your dependants, if any. In this connection, please follow the instructions provided in Visa Application Procedures to submit your visa application, as appropriate. The University will be the sponsor of your employment/training visa application and you will be the sponsor of your dependants.

The Immigration Department (“ImmD”) normally requires about two months for processing a visa application, so you are advised to submit your visa application as soon as possible but NO EARLIER THAN 6 MONTHS from the start date of your appointment. If the employment/training visa is not issued in time, you should not come to Hong Kong on the more easily obtainable tourist visa or by taking advantage of visa-free entry as a visitor.  It is important to note that failure to obtain an employment/training visa means that your contract of employment will be invalidated, and accordingly you will not be permitted to work in Hong Kong. Please also note that the visa application and issuance fees should be borne by the appointees and you will be invited to make payment and collect the “e-Visa” through the website of the ImmD once it is approved.

Upon arrival clearance, an “e-Visa” holder should present his/her valid travel document, an exit endorsement issued by the relevant Mainland authorities (where applicable), and the “e-Visa” saved on a personal mobile device or printed on a sheet of A4 white paper, and scan the encrypted QR code on “e-Visa” with the optical reader at an immigration counter. For details of the “e-Visa”, please visit the website of the ImmD.  You are required to send a certified true copy of your “e-Visa” and landing slip, via your Department, upon the date of your assumption of duty to the Human Resources Office for formal record.

Please note that under the existing immigration policy, if you are allowed to enter Hong Kong for employment, you are only permitted to take up the post as offered.  You cannot transfer to other employment (or take up studies as an undergraduate or postgraduate student), without having obtained prior permission from the Director of Immigration.  Breach of the condition of stay is an offence under the Immigration Ordinance, the maximum penalty of which is a fine of HK$50,000 and imprisonment for two years.  Any person who aids or abets you to commit an offence under the said Ordinance shall be guilty of the same offence and subject to the same punishment.
