Mass Transit Railway (MTR) system

The MTR network includes nine railway lines and Airport Express.  which cover most locations all over Hong Kong. The MTR also runs a Light Rail network between Tuen Mun and Yuen Long in the New Territories, and an inter-city train and High Speed Rail service to the Mainland.

Buses & Minibuses

Air-conditioned buses are readily available everywhere in Hong Kong. Fares are paid upon boarding based on distance travelled. Octopus cards and cash (exact change) are accepted on all buses. Click here to learn more about franchised buses and how to search for bus routes.

Minibuses are small buses with no more than 19 seats. There are two types of minibuses in Hong Kong:

Green minibuses: Operate on scheduled services with fixed routes and fixed fares; accept payment by Octopus card and cash (exact change required). Click here to check out the routes.

Red minibuses: Operate on non-scheduled services with flexibility on routing and fares; mostly accept cash only.

Taxis

Taxi provides a personalised, convenient point-to-point transport service for passengers. In Hong Kong, different taxis operate in different designated areas.

Red taxis: Operate throughout most of Hong Kong, except for Tung Chung Road on Lantau Island and the entire south side of Lantau Island

Green taxis: Operate only in the New Territories

Blue taxis: Operate only on Lantau Island

Trams

Street trams in Hong Kong operate on the north corridor of Hong Kong Island through Western District, Wan Chai, Happy Valley, Causeway Bay and North Point. Each tram ride costs the same flat fare regardless of the distance you travel. Octopus cards and cash (exact change required) are accepted on all trams.

Octopus Card

Most Hong Kong residents own an Octopus card which is a contactless stored-value card for payment. It is widely accepted by a variety of public transport, retailers and restaurants. You may purchase a Standard Octopus at the Customer Service Centres in all MTR stations (except Racecourse station). Learn more details here.
