Healthcare

Hong Kong’s healthcare system has ranked as one of the most efficient ones worldwide. Public and private healthcare services are the two major options in Hong Kong. Private healthcare service usually has a shorter waiting time and a higher cost when compared with public ones. When you visit a general practitioner, the total fee you pay usually includes the medication you need, meaning that you need not purchase medication separately at a pharmacy. It is great to start with learning the healthcare benefits provided by the University.

Public Healthcare
Eligibility & Charges

Holders of the Hong Kong Identity Card (HKID card) are entitled to subsidised medical services at public hospitals and clinics. You and your dependants (i.e. holders of dependant visas) are thus advised to apply for HKID cards as soon as possible after arrival to enjoy public medical services at low rates. Public Hospitals & Outpatient Clinics

There are public hospitals and institutionsspecialist outpatient clinics (SOPC) and general outpatient clinics (GOPC) in Hong Kong. Learn more about how to make an appointment with GOPC and SOPC.

Although you may enjoy cheaper cost and comprehensive medical facilities in public healthcare services, waiting time can be very long (including the Accident & Emergency services) and service levels can be lacking when compared to private ones. You are thus recommended to use private healthcare services to avoid long waiting times.

Please also note that dental services are not covered by the public healthcare system in Hong Kong. However, the government provides emergency dental services (only for pain relief and extraction) in 11 dental clinics with a limited quota each day. Students of primary schools participating in the School Dental Care Service programme organised by the Department of Health can enrol in annual dental care services.

Private Healthcare
