Language

The official languages of Hong Kong are Chinese and English. Official signs, announcements in public transport and menus are usually bilingual. While Cantonese is the mother tongue of the majority of the population, English and Mandarin are also frequently used especially in the workplace or public services. Though it shall not be a big problem if you wish to ask for direction, talk to a driver or order a meal here with simple English/ Mandarin sentences, simply show someone what you are asking for on Google Translate in case of any difficulties.

Language Courses

The University offers subsidised courses in Chinese (either Cantonese or Mandarin) for staff and their spouses. Courses would focus on the spoken language, particularly daily conversations. Application and enquiries could be directed to the Chinese Language Centre. Click here to learn more details.
